Sol Eytinge Jun. "Sliding on the Hill." From Harper's Weekly.

New York: February 15, 1873.  16 x 11.  Wood engraving.  Very good condition.

Sol Eytinge Jun was an American illustrator who worked for publications such as Frank Leslie's Illustrated NewspaperEvery Saturday and Harper's Weekly. During his time at Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper Jun mentored a sixteen year old Thomas Nast. Jun's works were included in books for authors such as Washington Irving, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Edgar Allen Poe.

In its day, Harpers Weekly was one of the best sources for lively, informative images of America and it remains so, today.  Each issue was filled with popular genre and detailed historical prints through which much of the country got its visual information about their world.  Views of American landscapes were among the most popular of prints of the period, and this is a particularly nice example of that genre.
