T.G. Dutton, "H.M.S.Raleigh, 50 Guns, (Captain, the Honorable George Hope) Bearing the Broad Pendant of Commodore Sir Thomas Herbert K.C.B"

London: T.G. Dutton, ca. 1850.  12 x 18 (image).  Lithotint by Day & Son.  Faint remnants of water stain in the image on the right hand side.  Print has been professionally conserved. Else, very good condition.

Built at Chatham, the frigate Raleigh was launched in 1845 and served for a time in the Atlantic Ocean off South America.  She also served in China during the Second Opium War in 1857 and sank in the same year when she struck a rock entering Macao.  The Raleigh was the flagship of Sir Thomas Herbert (1793 - 1861) who eventually became a rear admiral and a Member of Parliament.  This print which was drawn and published by Thomas Goldsworth Dutton is considered one of the finest marine artists of his day, and is noted for his many fine marine lithographs.  Overall, a highly detailed and accurately rendered print of this English naval vessel.
