Al[ban]  Jer[emiah] Klapp.  “The Andersonville Stockade.”

1903.  15 x 21 7/8.  Off-set color lithograph.  A few repaired short tears in margins not affecting image.  Very good condition.

In the tradition of Louis Prang’s famous Civil War chromolithographs, Klapp published this graphic image of the barracks at Andersonville, Sumter County, Georgia.  By the time this print was issued in 1903, the horrors of Andersonville Prison were well-known.  With the highest death rate of all Civil War prisons, it was even investigated by Confederate authorities, who recommended the transfer of most of its prisoners.  To illustrate the deplorable conditions, the artist details tattered clothing and malnourished frames, even painting an ogre-like face on the Confederate watchman in the lower right hand corner.
