Unattributed.  “Sir Thomas Wharton, Father of Philip now Lord Wharton.  1612 about the age of 23”.

Ca. 1800.  10 3/8 x 8 3/8 (sheet).  Watercolor drawing on wove paper trimmed to image and mounted to title sheet with gold lettering.  Small chip at top and bottom right hand side, not affecting image.  Very good condition.

This handsome and well executed watercolor is a much later study of a 17th century painting.  We date this piece to be early 19th century as it is on wove paper.  In the upper left hand corner is the coat of arms of the Wharton and Carey families.  Wharton married, Philadelphia Carey, the daughter of Robert Carey, First Earl of Monmouth.  Sir Thomas Wharton was an English landowner and member of the House of Commons between 1614 and 1622 and owned the estate of Aske Hall.
