William F. Cogswell. “Abraham Lincoln.” From The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents.
New York and Washington, D.C.: The Gravure Company of America, 1912. 10 ¾ x 7 ½. Photogravure. Facsimile signature. Very good condition.
A print from a fine series of photogravures done of the official Presidential Portraits. A tradition that started with Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington, it has carried through to modern times, though now, the official portrait of the President is a photograph until after they leave office. Some of the finest artists of the day were commissioned with the task of official portraitist, including Anders Leonard Zorn, George Healy, and John Singer Sargent.
