William Curtis.  Pl. 1934 “Agaricus aurantius. Orange mushroom.”  From Flora Londinensis; or Plates and Descriptions of such Plants as Grow Wild in the Environs of London....

London: W. Curtis, 1777-1798.  11 3/4 x 9 3/8 (platemark).  Engraving.  Original hand color. Full margins.  With text.

A finely engraved print from William Curtis’ (1746-1799) famous Flora Londinensis, a marvelous work intended to illustrate and describe every plant growing within a radius of ten miles around London.  This work, while informative and of high quality, was an unsuccessful business venture, and so after two volumes Curtis, who was debt-ridden, started the publication of the Botanical Magazine, a venture so profitable that it had been in continuous publication until 1980.  However, it is for his magnificent Flora Londinensis that Curtis has derived his place as one of the greatest of the botanical authors, and this print is a fine example of the justification of this ranking.
