Adam Perelle.  “La Porte St. Anthoine…”  From Views of Paris.

Paris: I Mariette, ca. 1650.  Etching and engraving.  Ca. 7 1/4 x 9 1/4.  Full hand color.  Very good condition.  (Ref: Gardens on Paper, p.86.)

A lovely print from a series of finely detailed prints of French gardens, fountains and palaces.  These prints were drawn and  etched by Adam Perelle.  Perelle and his father Gabriel were among the most prolific printmakers of the mid-seventeenth century, publishing some thirteen hundred works, mostly topographical views and formal landscapes.  In this series of views, architectural elements, formal gardens, elaborate fountains, and distant nature are rendered with great care and detail.  Incidental figures and horses add delight and visual interest.  Overall, a charming and important set of prints produced during a great period in French landscape design.
