John Appleton Brown (1844 –1902).  “Rough Winds do Shake the Darling Buds of May, and Summer’s lease hath all too short a date.” 

Late 19^th century.  10 ½ x 9 ¼ (image).  Graphite on tan laid paper.  Signed in pencil bottom left.  Two holes in upper margin well away from image.  Else, very good condition.   

John Appleton Brown was an American landscape painter working largely in pastels and oils.    He showed talent at an early age and studied under Emile Lambinet in France.  Brown spent many summers in his native northeastern Massachusetts and painting landscapes.
