William Hooker. “The Downton Strawberry.” Vol. 3. Pl. XV. From Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London.
London: W. Nicol, 1805-48. Aquatint. Original hand-coloring. Very good condition. Framed. A/A
A bright and colorful print from the Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London. This famous work of ten volumes contained some of the best fruit and flower prints to be found anywhere. The majority of these prints were drawn and engraved by William Hooker, well known for his superior output of botanical drawings and engravings. The finely sculpted aquatinting is wonderfully complemented by the rich hand-coloring, making these lush prints excellent examples of Hooker’s best work and the state of botanical illustration in the early nineteenth century.
