Jacques Barraband (1767-1809) was a French zoological, botanical and ornithological artist. Barraband is well known for his work with the famed French naturalist Francois Levaillant who issued three monumental works on tropical birds: Histoire Naturelle Des Perroquets, Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux Des Paradis et des Rolliers, (Birds of Paradise), and Histoire Naturelle des Promerops, (Toucans). The prints were engraved and then color printed à la poupée and finished by hand with watercolor. The result was some of the finest bird prints ever produced.
