A. Steiner.  “Fortification des Anciens Indigenes, sur la riviere Huron ou Aigle Chauve…”  [Huron, Ohio].

From Michel-Guillaume Saint Jean De Crevecoeur’s Voyage dans la Haute Pennsylvanie...  Paris, 1801.  6 x 8 ¾ (neat lines).  1/4.  Engraving by P.F. Tardieu.  Large margins.  Very good condition.

A map of ancient Native American fortification near present day Huron, Ohio.  Crevecoeur originally came to America as an émigré to New France, serving in the French militia during the French and Indian War.  After the war, Crevecoeur settled in New York where he became a prosperous farmer.  In 1782 he published his volume of essays about America which not only made him famous, but also helped to form the notion of an American character.
