S. Augustus Mitchell (1790-1868). Plate 11. "City of New-York." From A New Universal Atlas…
Philadelphia: Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler, 1854. 15 1/2 x 12 1/2. Lithographic transfer from engraved plate. Full original hand coloring. Minor stain in upper right hand margin. Very good condition.
A crisp, detailed map of the city of New York by Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler This firm took over the publication of S. Augustus Mitchell's important Universal Atlas in 1850, and they continued to produce up-dated maps that were amongst the best issued in the period. This map of New York is their version of the Mitchell map above, and it is an excellent example of their output. The city is shown with very good detail, and the area shown includes part of Brooklyn. The map illustrates and gives an index of the more important buildings in the city. Another interesting aspect of this map is that the developed portions of the city have been shaded, allowing one to see the extent of the inhabited areas of the city. In the top right corner of the map is a key to denominations and churches located on the map. A most desirable map of the city.
