Jan Christiaan Sepp.  Plate VI.  From Part 2 of Beschouwing der Wonderen Gods in de Minstgeachte Schepzelen of Nederlandsche Insecten . . .  [Insects of the Netherlands].

Amsterdam: J.C. Sepp & Son, 1765.  Approx. 6 ½ x 5.  Engraving.  Original hand color.

A print by Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739-1811) from a spectacular group of finely executed insect prints depicting each creature at several stages in its life cycle, as well as in its natural habitat in some cases.  Many are shown in progression from egg to pupa, caterpillar, chrysalis and finally to butterfly or moth.  Each stage is meticulously drawn and delicately hand colored.  Even the undersides of the leaves upon which some of the caterpillars feed are a shade or two lighter than the top surfaces, and even fine veins are represented.
