A print from a lovely series of English County Seats by William Westall (1781-1856). Originally from Hertford, England, Westall was taught drawing by his elder brother and later, became a student at the Royal Academy. It was here that he was selected landscape artist to Matthew Flinder’s expedition of Australia. Upon return, he published a series of watercolors based on his journeys including some of the earliest copies of Aboriginal cave paintings. In 1812 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy and regularly exhibited his work there until his death in 1850.
This series was done in the medium of aquatints, an elaborate process popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The use of aquatint gives these prints a delicate detail and texture that captures the charm of the original drawings. Elegant and quaint, these prints are a delightful reflection of the Regency period.
