Ambroise Verschaffelt. Plate 112.  “Camellia alba Stellata.”  From Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias…

Ghent: Ambroise Verschaffelt, 1851. 9 3/4 x 6 3/4 (paper size).  Lithograph by G. Severeyns and L. Stroobant. Original hand color. Very good condition.

This beautiful image was produced for a comprehensive series of 624 plates on varieties of camellias, begun in 1848 by Alexandre Verschaffelt, and continued by Ambroise Verschaffelt after March 1850 through to its completion in 1860. Artists who created the images for the Verschaffelts were B. Leon, A. Lagarde, G. Severeyns, L. Stroobant and P. Stroobant. These handsome, hand colored lithographs follow in the tradition of Jung's illustrations for Lorenzo Berlèse’s Iconographie du Genre Camellia . . . published in Paris from 1839-43.  Sitwell: Great Flower Books, p. 161.
