E.D. Smith.  Plate 6.  From Robert Sweet’s The British Flower Garden.

London: James Ridgway, 1829-37.  Approximately 8 x 5 (platemark).  Engraving.  Original full hand color.  Very good condition.

A charming botanical print from one of many publications by the prolific naturalist author, Robert Sweet.  This richly colored engraving truly captures the essence of a flower in full bloom.  Each blossom in this series presents a striking and detailed example for both the serious horticulturist and the casual amateur.

Not only are the eye-catching blossoms accurately depicted, but also the important bulb or root system, foliage, and the “interior segments.”  Also, the accompanying page of text is titled with the flower’s Latin and English names, contains Linnaean Class and Order, and relates specific details of the attributes of the plant.  This is indeed a delightful example of early nineteenth century natural history illustration.
