H.C. Andrews. Pl. 384. "Xeranthemum Variegatum. Variegated Eternal Flower."

From Botanist’s Repository, Comprising Colour’d Engravings of New and Rare Plants….  London: H. Andrews, 1797-1800.  9 1/4 x 6 1/2.  Engraving.  Original hand color. With accompanying text page.

Henry C. Andrews was an extremely talented and atypical botanical artist.  Atypical in that he was not only the artist, but also the engraver, colorist and publisher at a time when most botanical artists were only employed to “draw plates.”  These particular prints are from The Botanist’s Repository which encompasses Andrews’ first works.  The book was published in London in ten volumes between 1797 and 1812; it provided affordable prints to a growing population of amateur gardeners in Britain.  Andrews’ images have an artistic appeal compared to the more scientific botanical presentations found in rival publications.  Decorative and colorful, these prints are lovely representations of Andrews’ work and of early nineteenth century botanicals in general.
