A very striking image from one of England’s foremost landscape artists of the nineteenth century.  From an early age Joseph Millard William Turner (1775-1851) was interested in being an artist.  He started as a colorist and later as an illustrator for books.  His early work was with watercolors of English scenery, but he eventually became involved in oil painting.  As he became more proficient he went abroad to study the style of the Continental painters and to work in foreign and exotic places.  His watercolors and oils were popular in his day and they remained so until his death.  This steel engraving illustrates the variety of his work.
