1898.  Lithograph. 12 x 7.  Signed and dated on the stone.  Some tears in wide margins due to a previous owner pasting newspaper clippings on the reverse. Good condition. 

Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was a prominent American Impressionist painter, noted for his urban and coastal scenes. Along with Mary Cassatt and John Henry Twachtman, Hassam was instrumental in promulgating Impressionism to American collectors, dealers, and museums. He produced over 3,000 paintings, watercolors, etchings, and lithographs in his career, and was a founding member of The Ten, an influential group of American artists of the early 20th century. His most famous works are the “Flag” paintings, completed during World War I.

Hassam depicted street scenes from his earliest boyhood. In New York, Boston, Paris and London he saw poetry, romance and beauty in people walking through architectural canyons of their own creating.  In 1900 Hassam exhibited Twenty Seven Drawings of New York, London and Paris Streets.  #s 1 to 4 were of New York;  #s 5 to 13 were of London;  and, #s 14 to 27 of Paris.  “Old Clothes” was #21 in Paris.
