Thomas Doughty. “Woodcock Shooting.”  From The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports.

Philadelphia: J. and T. Doughty, 1830-32.  6 1/2 x 8 3/8. On stone by Thomas Doughty. Lithograph by Childs & Inman.  Original hand color.  Full margins.  Good condition.  Framed to museum specifications.

A colorful print with a delightful primitive quality, by the naturalized American painter, Thomas Doughty, who moved to America from England in the early nineteenth century.  The artist has depicted a wily fox glancing over his shoulder at a farm that represents the encroachment of civilization, as does the fence which is collapsing due to erosion.  This print is attractive and historically interesting as well.  It is significant because it is from the first major sport print color book produced in America (Bennett, p. 35).  Moreover, the major influence of the work was Thomas Doughty, the founder of the Hudson River School of painters.  For scholarly interest and decorative appeal it is a fascinating print.
