From a  German 18th century edition of Jonathan Dickinson’s, Gods Protecting Providence.  5 ¼ x 6 ¾.  Engraving.  Margins trimmed to image and just into areas of image at top.  German text on verso. Else, fine condition. 

This print depicts the merchant Jonathan Dickinson (1663–1722) his family, along with passengers and crew being captured by native Floridians.  In the background can be seen their ship the Reformation sinking after striking a submerged shoal.  

Dickinson was a merchant from Port Royal, Jamaica whose ship foundered off the coast of Florida on present day Jupiter Island in 1696.  Dickinson's party was held captive by the Jobe Indians, but was allowed to travel up the coat to St. Augustine.  During the journey the party endured much and five members died.  Upon arriving in St. Augustine, the party continued onto Charleston, SC and finally were able to reach their original destination, Philadelphia.  Dickinson was a prosperous merchant and twice served as Mayor of Philadelphia.
