Samuel V. Hunt.  “Eva Pointing out the Happy Land.”

From The Ladies Repository, March, 1856.  5 1/8 x 6 3/4 (image).  Engraved by Fitz E. Jones.  Light smudges in margins.  Else, very good condition.

Harriet Beecher Stow, the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, lived in Cincinnati from 1833 to 1850, and her novel was published in serial format in 1851-52 and as a book in 1852. By the time this exquisite engraving was published, the book was a huge best seller. Any reader would have recognized Little Eva teaching Uncle Tom to read in the course of this sad story that had a great impact on the emancipation movement in the world.
