After Pierre Eugène Du Simitière (1737-1784), after the sculptor Sylvanus Bevan (1644-1718). “William Penn.” From European Magazine.
London: J. Sewell, May 1, 1790. 7 ¾ x 5 (paper). Engraving by R. Stanier. Full margins. Margins trimmed close to plate marks as originally issued. Old binding holes in right hand margin. Very good condition. Rare.
A rare print of William Penn, after a drawing by Du Simitiere, taken from a bust of William Penn by the English sculptor Silvanus Bevan (1691-1765). The Bevan bust of Penn, which Du Simitiere owned and exhibited in his house in Chestnut Street, was considered to be the best extant likeness of Penn. Below the portrait is a roundel scene of Penn shaking hands with a Native American, representing his treaty with them.
