Triangular bottom right hand corner of image half way into the word 'Administration' filled with similar paper and image recreated in facsimile by hand as best as possible. Herbert Hoover was appointed as head of the newly established United States Food Administration in 1917. Hoover strongly believed that food was an important element in winning the war. However, he strongly opposed mandatory rationing and encouraged Americans to take a voluntary approach. Hence the reason this poster was issued. Before and during the war, the United States supplied a vast amount of food to its Allies and non aligned nations. It is estimated that the United States supplied ninety percent of the wheat found in British bread.
