Adalbert J. Volck.  (1828-1912).  Confederate War Etchings. 

Philadelphia: ca. 1880?  Second edition.  Etchings on chine appliqué.  11 1/2 x 15 ¾ (paper).  Original boards with front cover detached from cloth spine.  Original cloth spine attached to back cover board.  Chipping in top right and bottom right corner of front board.  Edges of both boards heavily worn.  Index sheet margins slightly trimmed.  Index sheet and 29 plates all with varying degrees of scattered foxing and water stains on a number of plates.  Overall, fair condition.  With cloth clam shell box to safely cradle publication.  Edition: 100.

A complete set of Civil War satirical images with an emphasis on southern view of the war.  Volck, who lived in Baltimore, was sympathetic to the south.  Between 1861 and 1864 he issued two series of loose etchings under the title of Sketches from the Civil War.  Volck used the name of V. Blada in order to avoid possible charges of treason.  These war time prints are extremely rare and have not appeared on the market in quite a long time.  After the war, Volck issued a collection of 29 prints, taken from his earlier two series, with the title of Confederate War Etchings.  Published circa 1880, the prints were housed loose in cloth spine boards and issued in an edition of 100.   A title page for this publication was never included.
