Unattributed. “The Official Map of Central and Western Europe showing New Boundaries.”
Chester, VT: National Survey Co., n.d., but 1919. Wax engraving. 12 1/4 x 17 3/4 (neatlines). Folded. As found.
This separately issued map would have been hot news as the belligerent countries of World War I approached negotiations toward the Treaty of Versailles. Two types of bold red lines show “boundaries of countries affected by the treaty” and “proposed boundaries of new states.” Shaded areas show “sections of which sovereignty is to be decided by plebiscite.” Some of the changes indicated on this map did not come about; however, this map presents a fascinating immediacy to showing Europe at a critical time in history.
