Charles F.W. Mielatz (1869-1919) was a German etcher and art teacher who emigrated to America as a boy, learned etching in Newport, RI, from James J. Calahan, studied in Chicago, and made a name for himself with his etchings of the Newport region, where he lived until about 1887.  He then moved to New York City, where he began a series of studies of the city, showing a superb talent for portraying its architecture.  From 1904 to 1919 he taught at the NAD.
