Jesse Lightfoot. "Map of Monmouth County, New Jersey.”

Middletownpoint, New Jersey: J. B. Shields, 1851.  39 ½ x 56 ¼.  Lithograph.  Original hand color.  Separately issued wall map, mounted on linen backing, and varnished as originally issued.  Archival linen tape on verso at top to reinforce area attached to top roller.  Most of original green ribbon edging intact.  Water stain at top.  Vertical and very narrow loss of map surface in Marlborough Township in-painted. Varnished has oxidized and the map surface has acquired a light brown patina, all as to be expected, but the map is generally clean and bright.  Typical cracks to map surface.  With original rollers.   Wood on top roller chipped right hand side and repaired horizontal crack in middle of roller.  Otherwise, map is in very good condition.  A/A

This is the first wall map of Monmouth County. There are four Inset maps of the towns of Freehold, Keyport, Middletown Point (today's Matawan), and Red Bank.  The twelve townships are indicated in capital letters: Atlantic, Freehold, Howell, Manalapan, Marlborough, Middletown, Millstone, Ocean, Raritan, Shrewsbury, Upper Freehold, and Wall. The map is embellished with fourteen engravings of churches, residence, hotel, boarding house, ladies seminary and a county building.  Much of the county is indicated as woods particularly in the south and near the coast.
