“Abraham Lincoln, The Nation's Martyr. Assassinated April 14th. 1865.”
New York: Currier & Ives, 1865. Medium folio. Vignette, ca. 15 x 13. Uncolored. Very good condition. C:26.
Currier & Ives, "America's Printmakers," issued many prints on political and social themes, and one of the staples of their output was the series of portraits of American Presidents. The firm issued a large number of different portraits of Abraham Lincoln, from the beardless images when he was first nominated for President to this memorial print published shortly after his assassination. This portrait of Lincoln would have hung in many black-draped homes around the country in the sad days after his death.
