William Croome. “Laurel Hill.” From Godey’s Lady’s Book.
Philadelphia, circa 1850. 4 3/4 x 7 (image). Engraved by A.W. Graham. Hand color. Very good condition.
Here is a pleasant and beautiful depiction of Laurel Hill Cemetery as it appeared when cemeteries were viewed as fine parks where civilized people would commemorate their deceased loved ones. Such parks were viewed as a fine asset for any city as it provided green space for relaxation as well as meditation. The view looks past some of the more lovely tombs and down the hill and Schuylkill River toward the city of Philadelphia in the distance.
