These prints which were issued in the twentieth century are from a rare two volume set which contained 72 facsimile reproduction Japanese wood blocks individually mounted in protective paper mats with printed identification labels. Adachi was one of the most respected printers of the 20th century. This map is by Emanuel Bowen, one of the best known cartographers of the eighteenth century. Bowen, together with the equally famous Thomas Kitchin, began to publish a series of large county maps in 1749, culminating in their \u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLarge English Atlas\u003c\/i\u003e, which was issued in on-going editions from 1750 to 1794. These maps are very popular both for their large size and for the wealth of information included on their printed surface. This map of Derbyshire is typical of their detailed maps, with hills, roads, towns, villages, cities, country estates, churches, and much else is clearly presented. The hundreds are outlined in contrasting colors and there are a number of paragraphs dotted about the map describing major towns, a list of the seats of the local nobility, and text about the wonders of the county. An elaborate rococo title cartouche graces the bottom left corner, and a smaller dedication cartouche is in the lower right.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhat makes this map unusual is that it is a separately issued, folding map. The map, which also appeared in the \u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLarge English Atlas\u003c\/i\u003e, was cut into 16 sections, which were mounted on linen so that they folded into a small, ca. 6 1\/2 x 5 1\/2, size, which then was inserted into a paper envelope. Maps such as this would be easier to handle, store, and perhaps use when one was traveling. Maps such as this, however, are also scarcer as they have a much lower survival rate than atlas maps. On July 3, the Spanish Squadron attempted to escape the harbor which was being blockaded by the American fleet commanded by Admiral Sampson. The Spanish fleet was no match for the Americans' five battleships and two armored cruisers. The campaign was a huge triumph for the modern United States Navy. At that time, structures known as orangeries came into fashion. Wealthy Europeans sought to grow and keep warmer climate plants, such as citrus and even palm trees, throughout the year. The potted trees could be transferred into these greenhouses to avoid the harsher, northern winters. These beautiful prints by Johann C. Volckamer illustrate types of the then newly popular citrus fruit in delicate detail. Encircling the fruit are baroque ribbons naming each of the varieties. The large fruit hang serenely in the foreground over exquisite landscapes, country houses, and gardens. Most of the which were located in and around Volckamer's home of Nuremberg as well as northern Italy. Krimmel and Samuel Jones.  Little information is available on the life and works of Jones.  He seems to have been commissioned by the original publishers to paint the background for the scene.  For the figures in the foreground, John L. W. Deuster.  Ca. 7 x 11.  Collotype by Rommler \u0026amp; Jonas, Dresden.  Print mounted onto decorative title board as issued. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eA rare and fascinating set of German prints of the United States.  In all, this series contains fifty views of the United States from New York to San Francisco, with the majority of the prints depicting life and the natural wonders of the American West.  The Europeans were fascinated with the American frontier due to the differences in the physical topography, social life, and native populations, not to mention their substantial financial investments in land there.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn 1881, Rudolf Cronau (1855-1939) was sent to the United States as a special correspondent for the German newspaper \u003cem data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDie Gartenlaube\u003c\/em\u003e.  His assignment was to produce a series of articles documenting American landscapes, cities, Native Americans, and life on the frontier.   Cronau traveled all about of the country, writing his articles and producing pen \u0026amp; ink drawings.  These images showed cities, imposing landscapes, scenes of life in the west, cowboys in their heyday, and portraits of Native Americas, including the first life portrait of Sitting Bull.  The drawings, which exhibit the skill Cronau gained through his training at the Düsseldorf Academy, were based on Cronau’s first hand observations.  These images are the equal in fascination to those of his contemporaries Frederick Remington and Charles M. The worker was nearly turned away until he pointed out his important role as the toolmaker for the other artisans who built the temple at Jerusalem. Upon realizing the truth of the iron worker's words, King Solomon gave him a place of honor beside his throne. Harrison's fortune was made in steel manufacturing, so the story had a special significance to him. The symbol of the iron worker was also an important one for the industrial northern states, whose heavy manufacturing capability allowed the North to win the Civil War and preserve the Union. decorative maps of France, Spain, the Netherlands and their regions by Willem (Guilielmus) Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), the progenitor of the famous Blaeu cartographic firm of Amsterdam.  Blaeu studied astronomy and sciences with Tycho Brahe, and in 1599 established a globe and instrument making business which soon expanded to include cartographic and geographic publishing.  This firm was to go on to become the largest and most important cartographic publishing firms in the world, run by his sons Cornelis (until his death in 1642) and Joan.  The maps issued by the Blaeu firm are known for their fine craftsmanship and design, and have been called “the highest expression of Dutch cartographical art.”   These maps, with their excellent original color, are premier examples of the Blaeu
