“Mrs. Hitchcock” (1796-1863) is credited with producing this drawing to illustrate Edward Hitchcock’s Report on the Geology of Massachusetts.   She is known to have been teaching in Deerfield as early as 1817 and married the president of Amherst College in 1821.  Her works were illustrated in the Port Folio magazine in 1821 and thereafter.  Being a woman illustrator at that time was unusual and judging from her delicate and detailed work her talents were considerable.
