London: ca. 1840. 18 5/8 x 28 ¼. Mezzotint and line engraving by William Henry Simmons (1811-1882). Original hand color.  Expertly repaired tear at bottom margin in title and ¾” into image. Wide margins. Paper lightly toned.  Else, very good condition.

Sir Francis Grant, R.A. (1803-1878) was born in Scotland, the fourth son of Francis Grant, Laird of Kilgraston.  Grant began his painting career depicting sporting scenes, such as this one, but was also noted, as can be seen here, for his skill at portraiture. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1842, in 1866 he received the distinctions of knighthood and being elected Academy President. From 1834 to 1879 Grant contributed 253 works to exhibitions at the Royal Academy, including many portraits, such as that of Queen Victoria, as well as other royalty and prominent figures of the day.
