E. M. Pottle & Isaac Israel.  “The War Congress of the United States of America.  They ‘Remembered the Maine.’  Members of the House of Representatives.  Fifty-Fifth Congress.”

Washington: The War Congress Publishing Company, 1898.  21 ¾ x 28 ¼ (paper).  Half-tone screen print.  Repaired tear into image from left hand side.  Else, very good condition.  Scarce.  Not in the Library of Congress.  A/A

A large view of the House of Representatives at the time of the conclusion of the Spanish American War.  Contemporary head photographs were used to depict every representative and each individual was assigned a number corresponding to a key below the image.  Also depicted and listed are the various journalists in the Press Gallery.  Surrounding the main image are various oval portraits of key politicians and military figures pertaining to the war.  President McKinley; Vice President Hobart; Secretary of War Alger; Secretary of Navy Long; Rear Admiral Sampson; Read Admiral Dewey; Commodore Schley; Captain Sigsbee; Major General Miles; Major General Merritt; Major General Lee and Major General Wheeler.

E. M. Pottle issued a print of the members of the House of Representatives in 1897 prior to the start of the war.  This image was reissued by Isaac Israel after the conclusion of the war to celebrate the House of Representatives role in the conflict.  Pottle’s initial print did not include a key identifying all the House members.  A companion print of the “United States War Senate” was issued as well.
