After Juan Bautista Villalpando.   “Jerusalem.”  Amsterdam: Pieter and Jacob Keur, ca. 1730. 14 x 18.  Copper engraving by Daniel Stoopendaal.  Attractive hand color.  Old repair three inch tear with old adhesive tape right hand side.  Old repair of two small chipped areas at top and bottom of center fold filled with old paper and old adhesive tape.  Old repaired tear into bottom portion of city.  Else, fine condition.  Sold as is.  A/A

A handsome “historical” map of ancient Jerusalem based on the work of Juan Bautista Villalpando, and issued in an early eighteenth century Dutch Bible.  In the center is laid out a bird’s eye view of the city, with the major buildings clearly drawn and numbered to an identifying key in the upper left.  Surrounding the main map are vignette scenes related to the ancient city, including a view of the facade of the Temple of Solomon, the Tabernacle, the Ark,  and other Judaic subjects.  Attractive and historically interesting for the insights it offers into the understanding of the Holy Land current in the early eighteenth century in Europe.
