Leiden: Pieter Vander Aa, ca. 1715.  6 x 9 (neat lines).  Engraving.  Very good condition.  A/A

A fine map which depicts Africa and the eastern portion of South America.  In the top left corner, Florida and Cuba is shown and named.  Fine detail in both land masses is clearly depicted and shipping routes between the two continents are indicated.  The title cartouche depicts Native Americans preparing food with a sunken galleon in the background.

Pieter (or Pierre) Vander Aa was a Dutch cartographer who started at an early age, being apprenticed to a bookseller at the age of nine, is well known for his decorative maps.  He published maps and views at the beginning of the era of scientific cartography, but he retained in his works many of the decorative features of the golden age of Dutch cartography.
