Carroll Tyson.  Plate 65.  “Belted King Fisher.”  From Twenty Birds of Mount Desert.

Otto Hoesch, Milan: 1934-35.  28 x 20.  Off-set color lithograph.  Signed in plate and in pencil by the artist.  Edition: 250.  Mounted to old backing board but stable.  Very small stain upper right corner.  Else, very good condition.  Includes paper cover booklet on the birds of Mt Desert Island with minor water stain on cover Dedication in pencil by James Bond on title page.  A/A

Tyson’s dramatic group of the birds of Mount Desert Island, Maine is well represented by this handsome print, issued loose in a portfolio after the originals by Tyson with no accompanying text.  The first edition of these prints was limited to 250 copies.  Prints and printmaking were extremely popular during the early 20th century in the U.S. and Europe.  Reproductions of many well known series such as Audubon and Currier & Ives were produced during this period.  Of the spectrum of quality from this period, this print is a fine example of the highest type of representation that could be achieved by off-set lithographic technique.

Accompanying the print is a booklet printed in 1941, “Birds of Mt. Desert Island Acadia National Park Maine”, written by Carroll Tyson and his nephew the American ornithologist James Bond.  This print is featured on the cover of the booklet.  The booklet is dedicated in pencil as follows: “Charles Meigs Biddle Cadwalader from Jim Bond, Aug. 1941.”   The folding map “Guide Map to Acadia National Park” is attached and folded to the inside back cover.  Paper binding is loose from booklet contents but can easily be re-attached.
