Prof. Frank Childs.  “Mettowee Valley, Granville, New York”.

Boston: Prof. Frank Childs, 1873.  37 ½ x 21 ¾.  Lithograph by J. H. Bufford.   Margins trimmed to image.  Old repair on back at top.  Vertical water stain upper right; three faint vertical slat stains with numerous small vertical and scattered spotting mostly in image.  Else, fine condition.  Sold as is.  Reps: 2547.  A/A

A large bird’s eye view of this pleasant bucolic scene in Washington County, New York.  This county abuts Vermont and it is by no coincidence that Frank Childs also painted and published large birds eye views of Vermont.

John H. Bufford.  Started in Boston as an apprentice to William S. Pendleton.  Moved to New York where he worked with Endicott and Currier.  Set up on his own in New York (1835-40) and then Boston (1841-1871+).  One of his apprentices (1855-57) was Winslow Homer.  “His work is almost invariably good, his sense of the essential in the general field seems to have been second only to that of Currier & Ives, his importance can be seen, and his contribution to Americana is in the very first rank.”  (Peters, America on Stone, p. 127).
