Simon Muhr (1845-1895) was a German-born jewelry manufacturer and philanthropist, who came to America with his father, Henry, in 1853. The family business, H. Muhr's Sons, was located at Broad and Race Streets in Philadelphia. Muhr was active in Philadelphia Jewish affairs as vice-president of the Jewish Hospital and a director of the Jewish Foster Home. He aided Russian immigrants, particularly the group which settled at Alliance,New Jersey. Muhr left a large portion of his estate to Jewish and other charities, including the sum of about $100,000 (one-third of his estate) to the City of Philadelphia as a college scholarship fund for local high school graduates. The fund is administered by the Board of City Trusts and continues to this day. $85
“A. Cassatt” in facsimile signature, “President of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.” Mezzotint engraving by Samuel Sartain. 16 x 12. Printed in Philadelphia, ca. 1900. Very good condition.
Alexander Cassatt was first vice-president of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1880 but left when George Roberts was chosen president over him. Returning in 1897, he became president of the railroad, which Roberts had consolidated strongly within Pennsylvania, and expanded on Roberts’ successes. Cassatt's greatest achievements were the railroad's tunnel into Manhattan and its huge Pennsylvania Station. Mezzotinted by Samuel Sartain, this portrait shows Cassatt in a classical format as a strong leader of industry. $125
