  A scene of New Ulm ("gegründet 1856") surrounded by eight smaller views forts, mills, and other buildings. Lovely view, with river in middle ground and Indians on hill in foreground. A note with this print in CL, probably written by Langstroth, states "This lithograph is not only rare in that it is one of the first chromos made in Cincinnati, but it is the earliest example ever seen of four color process printing from stones."

  This is a view of the city from the Kentucky side, with a family in the foreground. May have been intended for hand coloring as sepia color looks a bit unfinished.

  This is a large oval view of the resort, with images of different springs in the four corners. Issued as an advertisement.

  This is an advertising print for the Queen City Commercial College, and it includes information on the college, its courses, board, teachers, etc. It also includes three portraits of faculty in the middle.

  
  

• "Ringwalt and Avery, Importers and Dealers in Carpeting No. 69, West Fourth Street, Cincinnati." No date. 16 x 23. Hand colored lithograph.
  An image of "Pikes Opera House," with the "Ringwalt & Avery" name over a door. Other advertising includes mention of "Wheeler & Wilsons Sewing Machines" over another door and "Passenger R.R. Co. of Cincinnati" on a trolley.

• "Turnerleben in Cincinnati." [Turner Life in Cincinnati.] 1858. Credits read "Gez und Lith. von F. Bertsch, c.c. Turnerhalle" and "…Ehrgott & Forbriger, Cor. 4th and Main Street." 24 1/8 x 35 1/4. Tinted lithograph with hand color. [LOC, HSC]
  A print showing the members of a German social and athletic club. A group portrait of 74 men standing in front of a the Ohio River, with a nice view of Cincinnati in the background. The portrait heads are all based on photographs, and they are each keyed to names below the image. The flag of the society (dated 1850) is on the left., and a picture of the "Turnerhalle" is at the bottom. This latter image has the legend "Durch Uebung zur Kraft, durch Kampf zum Licht." [Achieve strength through practice, achieve enlightenment through struggle.] The Turners were members of a German social and athletic club, "Turnverein," focusing on social, athletic, gymnastic and military activities, as well as forming militia units. The first such American society was formed in Cincinnati in 1848 and it played an important part of Cincinnati's German population in the 19th century. For more information on the Turnverein, cf. Thomas B. Rentschler's Rifles and Blades of the German-American Militia and the Civil War.

  The images are after photographs by J.P. Ball, who also published the print. It shows a single building and a group of students. Also a small inset portrait of Rev. D.A. Payne, D.D.

  
  

Genre & Decorative

• ["First Prize"] By Helen Searle. 1869? 13 1/2 x 11 1/8. Chromolithograph. [CL]
  The title, in quotes, is on a label on the back of the mat. No title is not visible on the image, but the title may be on back of print. This is a wonderfully rendered still-life of a marble counter top with fruit and champagne glass and a fly. There is a card on same board in the Cincinnati Library with this imprint, "Ehrgott, Forbriger & Co./ Happy new Year./ 1869." This probably came with this print.

  
  

• Two still-lifes by Helen Searle. Ca. 1872. Chromolithographs, possibly by Ehrgott & Forbriger, Cincinnati. 17 3/4 x 22 1/4.

  These two prints include no imprint to indicate lithographer, but as Ehrgott & Forbriger did work for Helen Searle (cf. above), these may have been produced by the firm. Image with birds. Image with wine.
