Ca. 8 1/4 x 12. A few repaired tears and chips in right margin, overall very good condition. With original text sheet.
In 1856, Stephen A. Douglas offered ten acres of land on the south side of Chicago to a denomination which would build university for the city. The Presbyterians considered the offer, but declined, but the first Baptist Church of Chicago accepted. The students began to enroll in 1858, though the first building wasn't completed until February 1859. The main building was constructed in 1863 and for a while the University was successful. The great fire of 1871 and panic of 1873, left the University in debt and it closed at the end of the academic year of 1885-86. Some of the trustees, trying to keep the University alive, approached John D. Rockefeller for support. Rockefeller decided to finance the resurrection, and his funds along with local contributions allowed the new University of Chicago to open in 1892. This image shows the original building, with students on the grounds in front, including a pair on their way to rowing practice. $850

This large and handsome view of Dartmouth College was undertaken in 1851 by three members of the college: E.T. Quinby, Geo. W. Gardner and Charles Caverno, who upon inquiry in Boston, found that the finest engraver in the region was at the time imprisoned at Windsor, Vermont for counterfeiting currency.
Christian Meadows, born in England ca. 1814, had come to the United States in the 1830s. After marrying in Boston in 1839, he worked there for ten years. In 1849 he was caught in a counterfeiting plot while in the employ of printer and engraver William W. Wilson.
After conviction, Meadows was sentenced to prison in Windsor, where he served three years. The Superintendent of the prison, Henry Harlow, allowed Meadows to travel to Dartmouth under guard, in order to make drawings in preparation for executing the engraving. Meadows was pardoned and released on July 4, 1853. He set up in Windsor as an engraver until 1859, after which time there is no record of him. $1,800

- (Louis) William Engel. "Dane Law-School, Cambridge Mass." 6 1/4 x 7 1/4. Mounted on another sheet with lithographed decorative borders. Boston, circa. 1852-54. Some waviness due to two pieces of paper adhered.
A lovely architectural rendering, this view of the Harvard University Law School shows the building after 1845 when a long transverse ell was added. The architecture of the building is carefully depicted, and a horse drawn bus that ran from Cambridge to Boston is shown in the foreground. Evidently this is a very scarce print as described in Hamilton Vaughan Bail's Views of Harvard, page 232, plate 62. Perhaps for an album or portfolio. The Boston Athenaeum has this print in a curious book titled Hartshorn's Commercial Tables by John Hartshorn (Boston, 1852) with others by Engel. The Athenaeum also has a lithograph by Engel with the lithographed decorative border.
See Pierce and Slautterback, Boston Lithography, p. 171 for information on Engel. We find this lithographer absent from the usual sources, such as Peters, Deak, Stark, and Whitehill & Kennedy. A scarce city view. $575

- "Otterbein University, Westerville, Ohio. R. T. Brookes, Architect." 14 x 20. Published ca. 1872. Chromolithograph by Strobridge & Co. Left and right hand margins trimmed just into the image. Expertly repaired tear in bottom margin that extends 1/8 of an inch into the image. Otherwise, fine condition and color.
Originally founded in 1847 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Otterbein University was named after Reverend Phillip Otterbein who was founder of the religious group in the late 18th century. The university is the second oldest coeducational school in the United States and is not far from Columbus, Ohio. The four year liberal arts college is well known for it theatrical arts program. The building depicted in the print is an excellent example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Known today as Towers Hall it was built in 1871 following a fire that consumed the previous building. In 1982, Towers Hall was restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This print was produced in Cincinnati by Strobridge & Company who can trace its roots to 1849, to the founding of Elijah Middleton's print publishing enterprise. Middleton began producing lithographs in the 1850s, shortly before Hines Strobridge joined the firm in 1855. Strobridge achieved partnership in 1859, and took over the company completely in 1861. Producing battle prints for national sale, the firm thrived during the Civil War. Suffering a devastating fire in 1865, the company rebounded by making its printing processes even more efficient for high-volume commercial production. Most well-known for their theatrical and circus posters, they also participated in printing and selling the sort of stock print that sustained many printing businesses. This print is a fine historical document and a colorful decorative image. $975
University of Pennsylvania

The print at left is a 20th century photographic reproduction. The text below reads, "Founded 1740 as a Charity School, to which was added the Academy in 1749 ~ Chartered as the College, Academy and Charitable School of Philadelphia in 1755 ~ The Medical School was established in 1765 ~ The present name was adopted in 1791."
The watercolor shown at right is an original piece of art based on the print. Both images depict the campus of the University of Pennsylvania as it would have appeared in 1765. The two buildings shown are The College and Academy Building at left, and the Dormitory and Charity School at right. For the pair $850
Pennsylvania State University

- Richard Rummell. "The Pennsylvania State College." [Penn State]. Published in New York by Littig & Company, 1910. Photogravure. Uncolored as issued. Very good to excellent condition.
At the turn of the century, a small New York art publisher, Littig & Company commissioned various artists to create a series of watercolor paintings of some of the nations most prestigious colleges and schools. From these water colors, engravings in photogravure were made on copper plates and distriubuted, in limited number, to the various schools and to a few art dealers throughout the country. Many may still be seen in the Administration building and in the offices of the Deans in many of the region's finest schools. These prints differs widely from other college prints in their panoramic quality: indeed, in many cases, they offer the only panoramic views available today. Each artist visited a campus and conferred with the Administration about future buildings authorized for the school. He would then draw these projected buildings into the campus scene, which was projected from an apparent altitude of about 300 feet. In some cases, this gives the viewer the impression that the scene was painted perhaps ten years later. On a few occasions, building plans were subsequently altered which resulted in an inaccurate depiction of the college. Many find these minor alterations historically interesting and amusing. $750
