George Peter Alexander Healy. “John Quincy Adams.” From The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents.
New York and Washington: The Gravure Company of America, 1908. Approx. 8 x 11. Photogravure on chine appliqué mounted to India paper. Facsimile signature. Very good condition.
A fine series of photogravures done of the official Presidential Portraits. A tradition that started with Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington, it has carried through to modern times, though now, the official portrait is a photograph until the President leaves office. Some of the finest artists of the day were commissioned with the task of official portraitist, including Anders Leonard Zorn, George Healy, and John Singer Sargent.
A brief biography of each President accompanies each portrait.
