Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins ((1807-94) "Plain Fishing Eagle. Haliætus Unicolor." From John Edward Gray’s Illustrations of Indian Zoology.

London: Treuttel, Wurtz, Treuttel Jun. & Richter and Parbury, Allen & Co., 1830-35. 11 x 18 1/4". Lithograph with original hand color. Wear at edges, else very good condition.

John Edward Gray (1800-75) was a prolific naturalist in Britain, publishing many papers and zoologies during his lifetime. Gray collaborated more than once with Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, British sculptor and natural history artist.

Hawkins may be best known for his work on life-size models of dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park (London). Working with American paleontologist, Joseph Leidy, he also mounted the first dinosaur skeleton, Hadrosaurus foulkii, in 1868 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
